Assignment 2: Exposure Triangle

1st Attempt

Shallow-depth-of field

Deep-depth-of field

Freeze action

Motion blur

Afterword
I thought I could do better for this assignment.
I wasn’t satisfied with the shallow depth of field.
I love the subjects for the deep depth of field, but a few people commented that the boat is in the mid-ground instead of foreground. One of the classmates suggested that I should crop away the foreground.
The motion freeze is underexposed. I would try brightening it up. The motion blur is a typical photos, kind of ‘tourist-sy’.
I’m most likely going to retake the whole of Assignment 2. Wish me luck! J

Assignment 1: Objects as Subjects

Assignment aim: Apply visual elements on ordinary objects
Technique: straight photography (no digital manipulation
required)
Task: Express the following visual qualities via photography
(one photo each):
  • Line
  • Shape
  • Form
  • Pattern
  • Texture

1st Attempt
Lines

I took this picture in August, roughly a week or two after National Day. I thought it would be an interesting picture of lines (made up of small flags). However, my classmates commented that the flat at the background is like a "thorn in the eye" L

Shapes

I feel that shape is one of the hardest to get. It’s easy to snap a photo of ‘shape’ (e.g. bottle caps, windows, doors- shoot straight on) but it’s so hard to get an interesting one.

Form

I wasn’t sure what ‘form’ should look like. This is my interpretation of form. Comments received from classmates include:
-nice photograph
-look more like pattern
-look like shapes

Pattern

Iluma is simply a piece of art by itself.

A crystal window panel at the art museum. I love the colour!!

Texture

I thought this is a pretty cool texture. However, a few people saw it as lines. (I wonder if I should use this as lines?)

Afterword

This is a pretty challenging assignment. Initially, I thought this would be easy. Obviously, it turned out to be otherwise. There are too many interpretations to a piece of photograph. On the whole, I really enjoyed working on this assignment. Because of this assignment, I have gone to places that I may never go and have discovered new perspectives towards many things. It’s amazing how an ordinary object can turn out to be so interesting under the camera lenses.

Final

Lines:
The whirlpool
@Parkmall
This was initially meant for texture, but on closer look, it does connote a stronger "lines".

Form:
The Lantern
@ACM

Pattern:
Illusion
@Illuma
I was thrilled by how the effect turns out.

Shape:
Isolated
@Bras Basah

Texture:
Roughened
@NUS Museum

Class Exercise A

Photography Competition

1. Select one winner and state briefly his/her winning strategies
2. If you were one of the judge, which picture will you select as
an overall winner
3. Give your judge’s comment to defend your chosen winning
photograph.

The photographer has managed to capture the movement of the children and water beautifully and clearly. The natural lighting also created a good contrast between the background (waterfall) and foreground (children) which brings out the focus on the children. Moreover, the joyous mood derived from the composition and colour is stunning to the audience.

2. The 6th annual Smithsonian magazine Photo Contest-Johan Esing

3.I absolutely love the quiet, peaceful and laid back mood presented in this photograph. The lighting and colours are mesmerising. And the photographer has managed to capture what appears to be two entirely separate scenes in one shot.
